Closure Shock in Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster and Gourock
Amazon is set to close its fulfilment centres in Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster, and Gourock. A company spokesman confirmed all staff affected will be offered roles at other UK sites.
New Hubs and Job Boosts
The new locations are Peddimore in the West Midlands and Stockton-on-Tees in the North East. Amazon expects to create 2,500 jobs over the next three years at these centres.
Firm Defends Moves Amid Global Job Cuts
“We’re always evaluating our network to meet business needs and improve the experience for employees and customers,” Amazon told Sky News. “We may close older sites, improve existing ones, or open new centres.” They added a consultation has launched on the proposed 2023 closures.
“All affected employees will be offered the chance to transfer,” said the company. “We remain committed to our customers, employees, and communities across the UK.”
Crunch Time for Amazon Staff
The announcement comes as Amazon slashes 18,000 jobs globally, marking a major shake-up for the tech giant.
