UK Issues Amber Heat Alert as Second Scorching Heatwave Hits London and Beyond

The UK is preparing for a scorching blast as an amber heat-health alert heats up London and several English regions. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has sounded the alarm from 12pm Friday, June 27, until 6pm Tuesday, July 1, warning of rising heat-related deaths and strain on healthcare and infrastructure.

This is the second amber alert this month, following a warning issued on June 19.

Temperatures Set to Soar to a Sizzling 34°C

The Met Office forecasts a gradual climb in the mercury for London over the coming days:

  • 27°C on Friday, June 27
  • 29°C on Saturday, June 28
  • 31°C on Sunday, June 29
  • 34°C on Monday, June 30
  • 31°C on Tuesday, July 1

The alert covers London, the East Midlands, East of England, South East, and South West.

Heatwave Threatens Vulnerable and Stretches NHS to Breaking Point

The UKHSA warns of serious health risks, especially for the elderly and those with existing illnesses. Care homes and hospitals may overheat, putting additional pressure on already-burdened NHS staff and emergency responders.

There is also a risk to vital services, including potential disruptions to transport, power infrastructure, and frontline care delivery.

Rising Drownings Trigger Water Safety Crisis

With temperatures climbing, thousands are expected to flock to rivers and lakes to cool off. But emergency services have issued a stark warning following a 15% rise in water-related incidents this year—over 280 rescues so far, with 15 tragic fatalities.

During Drowning Prevention Week, firefighters are stepping up safety awareness. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey recently visited Kingston Fire Station to witness life-saving demonstrations using the Brigade’s river flume tank, showing the hidden dangers lurking beneath water surfaces.

Assistant Commissioner Pam Oparaocha: “With warm weather and school holidays on the horizon, we want people, especially young people, to enjoy our waterways safely. That starts with being alert and prepared.”

Top Safety Tips to Beat the Heat and Stay Safe

Deputy Mayor of London Jules Pipe urged caution around water:

“London’s rivers and lakes may look appealing in this heat, but they pose serious dangers. Stick to safety rules and avoid swimming in unfamiliar or unsupervised areas.”

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid going out during peak sun hours (11am–3pm)
  • Stay cool indoors and keep hydrated
  • Check on elderly and vulnerable neighbours
  • Use throwlines or public rescue stations near water
  • Call 999 immediately in an emergency
