UK on Alert as Asian Hornet Sightings Surge

Spotted an Asian hornet buzzing around your garden or out and about? Don’t ignore it. Nature groups are sounding the alarm over a possible spike in these invasive pests. Asian hornets threaten Britain’s bees and wildlife, and experts urge the public to stay sharp.

Bees in Danger – What You Need to Know

Nicola Spence, the UK’s chief plant health officer, has issued a fresh warning after record Asian hornet sightings last year. While these hornets aren’t more dangerous to humans than native species, they are a major threat to honey bees and other pollinators vital to our ecosystem.

See an Asian Hornet? Here’s What to Do

If you spot one of these hornets, report it quick. The free Asian Hornet Watch app makes reporting easy and is available for both iOS and Android devices. Early detection is crucial – the species is not yet fully established in the UK, so swift action can stop them in their tracks.

Growing Threat from Invasive Species

The Environment Department (Defra) confirms early trapping is key to eradication. Meanwhile, the Wildlife and Countryside Link (WCL), representing 83 top nature groups, warns that recent flooding and warmer weather are helping invasive pests spread faster. Alongside Asian hornets, look out for:

  • Japanese Knotweed – wrecks buildings
  • Giant Hogweed – sap can burn skin
  • Himalayan Balsam – chokes native plants and worsens flood risks

The WCL also flagged even more unwelcome arrivals – Red Imported Fire Ants, Chinese Mitten Crabs, and Chinese Mystery Snails – creeping into the UK through Europe.

Experts Issue a Stark Warning

“Invasive species are already one of the biggest threats to the UK environment,” says Richard Benwell, WCL chief executive. “They smother waterways, outcompete native species, cause billions of pounds in damage to homes and businesses, and can even harm human health.”

Don’t wait. Spot an Asian hornet? Download the Asian Hornet Watch app and report it immediately to help protect British wildlife and biodiversity.
