Call The Midwife Serves Up Biggest Christmas Special Ever

Call The Midwife fans, rejoice! The BBC has announced a first-ever two-part Christmas special for the beloved series. Instead of the usual 90-minute festive episode, viewers will get two 60-minute instalments, ending on a tantalising Christmas cliffhanger.

Festive Drama and Danger in 1960s East London

Set in swinging 1960s East London, the midwives at Nonnatus House are back delivering babies and spreading joy. A funfair rolls into Poplar, lifting spirits – but festive fun takes a dark turn when news breaks of an escaped prisoner. Locals fear the fugitive could be lurking nearby after a spate of break-ins, adding tense drama to the holiday season.

Heartwarming Moments and Festive Frolics

  • The Turner kids are buzzing over the Blue Peter Christmas Appeal, rallying donations of Dinky cars and scrap metal.
  • Trixie (Helen George) makes a joyful return, reuniting with her brother Geoffrey (Christopher Harper).
  • Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen) enjoys Christmas with her grandson Harry.
  • Violet (Annabelle Apsion) hosts a fiercely competitive mince pie contest.
  • The Buckle family scrambles to prepare for Reggie’s chaotic homecoming.

First-look snaps show emotive scenes at a carol concert, the Turner children opening presents, and Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi) embracing the festive spirit dressed as Father Christmas, complete with sack and bell.

Creators Glow Over Christmas Treat for Fans

“Who doesn’t love finding an extra, unexpected present underneath the Christmas tree?” said Heidi Thomas, creator and writer. “When I was asked to write a two-part Christmas special for 2024, I couldn’t resist.”

Executive producer Dame Pippa Harris added, “For the first time, viewers can luxuriate in a two-part festive treat this Christmas. Heidi has created a spellbinding special which I know will delight our loyal fans.”

Lindsay Salt, BBC Drama director, promised “Call The Midwife’s biggest Christmas ever” and “an absolute treat” for viewers this holiday season.

The two-part special will air on BBC One over Christmas, with dates to be announced. Plus, a fresh eight-episode season returns early 2025, with a 15th series already greenlit. The midwives’ Christmas tradition is alive and well!
