Port of Dover Boosts Border Booths Ahead of Summer Rush

The Port of Dover is ramping up efforts to slash wait times this summer. They’re installing 50% more French border control booths, set to be ready before the busy getaway weekend from July 22-24. This move aims to speed up passenger flow and ease the congestion at the port.

Smarter Traffic Routes and Passenger Help on Site

Traffic inside the port is getting a makeover. Routes have been rerouted to improve vehicle flow and handle peak travel spikes better. Plus, the port’s expanded team of Passenger Champions will be on hand with assistance and info.

Travellers can also expect better facilities — new toilet blocks and a refreshment stand will open before the border controls, offering some relief before queues build up.

Top Tips From the Port for Smooth Summer Travel

Dover remains a top pick for families heading abroad this summer,” says Doug Bannister, Chief Executive of the Port of Dover. “We want everyone’s trip to kick off without a hitch. While we’re prepared, we urge travellers to plan ahead to dodge delays.”

With the UK no longer in the EU, expect longer border checks — typically 60 to 90 minutes at peak times. The port advises:

  • Book or confirm your ferry tickets before arriving.
  • Check your ferry company’s website for travel updates before setting off.
  • Follow Kent County Council’s ‘Check Before You Travel’ guide.
  • Arrive only for your scheduled time slot and allow plenty of journey time.
  • Bring essentials like food and water in case of delays.
  • Stick to main roads to avoid traffic jams and disruption to locals.
  • Have all documents ready at border control: passports, vaccination certificates, and if needed, Covid test results to speed up your passage.

Ready for the Summer Surge

The Port of Dover is working closely with ferry companies, border authorities, government bodies, and Kent County Council to ensure smooth sailing this holiday season. As Bannister puts it, “We’re ready for the busy summer ahead and look forward to welcoming visitors.”
