Brighton’s Beloved Dockerills Hardware Store to Close After Nearly a Century
One of Brighton’s most treasured shops, Dockerills, is set to close its doors for good at the end of September. This family-run hardware store on Church Street has been a fixture in the North Laine community for decades.
A Century of Service Comes to an End
Dockerills is the last of its kind in Brighton, with roots stretching back to 1915 when Walter Dockerill opened the original store on Edward Street. In the 1970s, the Dockerill family moved the business to the current Church Street location, where it’s been a trusted local supplier ever since.
Family Thanks Loyal Customers as Era Ends
“We thank you once again for your support, and we hope to see you around the North Laine area as we continue to build on the legacy and freehold of our historical Regent House building,” the Dockerills family said in a statement.
The closure marks the end of an era for Brighton shoppers who have relied on Dockerills for their DIY and hardware needs. It’s a major moment for the North Laine community — symbolising both resilience and the inevitable shift in local businesses.
