Blue Peter to Award Prince William Prestigious Green Badge
Prince William is set to receive Blue Peter’s iconic green badge for his work with The Earthshot Prize, a global effort tackling the planet’s toughest environmental problems. The award will be handed over during Blue Peter’s 65th Birthday special airing on Friday, October 13th.
Presenter Joel Mawhinney will present the green badge to the Duke of Cambridge. The show will also feature a segment where Prince William helps Joel unveil the “big badge wall” – a display packed with nature-themed drawings and creations sent in by young viewers.
Green Badge: A Symbol of Environmental Commitment
The green badge, a Blue Peter staple since 1988, rewards kids championing causes like climate action, recycling, wildlife protection, and habitat conservation. Legendary recipients include Princess Diana, Sir David Attenborough, Greta Thunberg, and Steve Backshall.
Notably, Prince William and his late mother were also honoured with Blue Peter’s coveted Gold Badge in 2017 – an exceptionally rare accolade reserved for those who make a huge impact on society.
Big Birthday Bash with Former Hosts and Celebs
To mark 65 years on air, Blue Peter has roped in former hosts Matt Baker, Lindsey Russell, and Radzi Chinyanganya. Current presenters Abby Cook and Joel Mawhinney, accompanied by the famous Blue Peter pet Henry, will take on thrilling challenges including white-water rafting.
Birthday messages will come from big names like Alex Scott, Gaby Roslin, Gary Lineker, Gethin Jones, and Coronation Street stars. Gold badge holders such as Sky Brown, Ellie Simmonds, and Joe Wicks will also send their best wishes.
Blue Peter’s Legacy Lives On
With over 265,000 children aged 5-15 proudly owning a Blue Peter badge, the show’s legacy remains strong. Every year it receives more than 100,000 entries including letters, artwork, and ideas, all personally read and replied to by the Blue Peter team.
This year’s celebrations also include the launch of a new Book Badge, designed by famed artist Sir Quentin Blake. Plus, a special Doctor Who collaboration will see 500 lucky fans win limited edition competition badges on November 24th.
The 65th Birthday special promises a heartfelt tribute to Blue Peter’s iconic history and its ongoing mission to inspire young people to protect the planet.
