Maritime Chief Bows Out After Four Stormy Years at MCA
Leading the charge in maritime safety and climate-fighting innovation has been a true privilege. Over four whirlwind years, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has evolved dramatically—and I’ve been proud to steer the ship.
A Changing Tide for Maritime Safety
During my tenure, we’ve revolutionised how the MCA operates and carved out a bigger role on the global maritime stage. From adopting cutting-edge tech that speeds up rescues at sea, to pushing for cleaner, greener vessels, we’ve tackled the big safety challenges head-on.
This period also saw the MCA thrust into the spotlight. Highlights include celebrating 200 years of Her Majesty’s Coastguard, ensuring ship safety via rigorous surveys and inspections, and earning top marks in the International Maritime Organization’s recent UK Maritime Administration audit. We’ve also championed seafarers’ rights with relentless determination.
Sailing Into Retirement—But Not Without a Final Wave
Now it’s time for me to hand over the helm to a capable Executive Team ready to carry on the groundbreaking work. Leaving this role has been bittersweet. The challenge and the cause have meant everything to me.
Supported by my family, I’m stepping back officially in October after four years, moving into what they call retirement—but to me, it’s a relaunch to focus on what matters most, closer to home and loved ones.
Confidence in the Next Crew
Until my final day, I’ll work tirelessly to ensure a smooth handover. The MCA is a brilliant organisation staffed by some of the finest leaders I’ve ever met. I’m confident that the agency will continue to grow and thrive, leaving it stronger than when I joined back in 2018.
