Double Lifeboat Drama as Thick Fog Hits Brighton Coast
Brighton’s RNLI crew were kept busy yesterday, March 26th, 2025, responding to two fog-related incidents off the coast. Dense fog turned the sea into a dangerous maze for water users, sparking panicked calls.
Mystery Paddleboarder Vanishes in Thick Fog
Just after 10am, a female paddleboarder near King’s Esplanade disappeared into the fog for over 15 minutes. An onlooker fearing the worst raised the alarm — especially as she wasn’t wearing a life jacket. The volunteer lifeboat team relied on onboard radar to hunt through the pea soup but thankfully found her safe and sound back on shore.
Spear Fisher’s Underwater Ordeal Near Palace Pier
Later at 2:45pm, the lifeboat crew rushed out again after reports that a spear fisherman near Brighton Palace Pier had not resurfaced. The man had last been seen 20 minutes earlier, submerged in murky waters swarming with jet skis. Rescue teams found him sitting calmly on a ledge beneath the pier, alive and unharmed.
“Fog can make the sea incredibly disorientating – both for those in the water and those trying to spot them from shore. We’re relieved both people were found safe, but these calls highlight the need for proper preparation and awareness of changing sea conditions.” – Charlie Dannreuther, Lifeboat Operations Manager, Brighton
