Coastguard SOS as Teens Play with Danger at Cleethorpes
Two teens sparked a Coastguard scramble after they were spotted risking their lives in rough seas at Cleethorpes. The pair were seen darting between wild waves on the slipway at North Promenade, putting themselves in serious danger.
Frantic Search Amid Choppy Seas
On Thursday, 8 January, Coastguard teams raced to the scene fearing the worst—that the youngsters might have been swept out by the crashing waves over the seawall. It wasn’t clear if they’d made it back safely or were lost at sea, triggering an urgent, wide-reaching search.
- No sign of the teens was found during the sweep.
- Authorities stood by ready to launch a Cleethorpes RNLI lifeboat and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 912 if needed.
Youths Found Safe — But Slapped Down by Coastguard
The suspense ended when the 17-year-old boy and 18-year-old girl turned up safely in a private car back at the scene. They were quickly given a stern telling off by Coastguard officers.
“Watching waves crash over the sea wall can be exciting, and many enjoy taking photos,” a Coastguard spokesperson said. “But please don’t risk your life or those of emergency crews just for a photo or one-upping the waves. We thank the caller for alerting us and are relieved this ended safely.”
This close call is a stark warning: wild seas are no playground. Ditch the dares and selfies, and let the experts handle the rescue work.
