Blustery Winds Wreck Christmas Swim Plans as UK Faces Winter Storm Warnings
Yellow Alerts Spell Trouble for Vulnerable Brits
The South West is bracing for a nasty Christmas as a cold health alert kicks in from 6pm Christmas Day to midday Boxing Day. The UK Health Security Agency warns vulnerable folks face a “greater risk to life” and hospitals could see a surge in patients.
The Met Office has issued yellow wind warnings across the South West and Wales. Winds will roar at 45-55mph, with coastal gusts up to 65mph. Expect chaos on roads and possible power blackouts.
Given the more unusual wind direction, this may lead to some disruption to transport and power supplies,” said the Met Office. “Large waves will be an additional hazard on some coasts.”
Christmas Swim Events Cancelled as Seas Turn Violent
Festive plunges have been called off amid wild waves and stormy seas. Cornwall’s Coverack Christmas swim is pushed to New Year’s Day for safety. Devon’s Start Bay Inn also cancelled their Boxing Day dip due to dangerous conditions.
Elsewhere, temperatures hover around 7°C in the North East and 6°C in the South East—chilly but nothing unbearable.
No White Christmas — Dry but Windy Weather Ahead
Sorry, snow fans — the Met Office says a white Christmas is “highly unlikely.” Instead, expect dry weather dominated by blustery winds sweeping the nation through the festive weekend.
