Cosmic the Cat Reunited After 11-Day Disappearance at National Highways Base

A heartwarming rescue ended in joy as Cosmic, a one-year-old cat, was found safe after vanishing for 11 days at a National Highways outstation.

Family’s Break Turns Into a Cat Hunt

Saroja and Patrick Noel were travelling with their daughters Indra, 13, and Prabha, 10, from Dagenham to the Lake District. A stop at Watford Gap services turned tense when Cosmic slipped out of his carrier and escaped into the nearby National Highways Traffic Officer base.

Despite the team’s best efforts, Cosmic remained elusive. Traffic Officer team manager Mick Tomlinson advised the family to leave Cosmic’s carrier and food behind so the staff could continue searching while the family pressed on with their journey.

Highways Staff Go Above and Beyond to Save Cosmic

“We have woods at the back of the outstation which must have felt like a playground for Cosmic. We were out looking, trying to entice him with food to build his trust and catch him but he was nowhere to be seen. With the M1, a river, and a railway line nearby, we were worried. Staff even bought tins of food out of their own pockets,” Mick revealed.

After four days, Cosmic reappeared—hungry but wary. Another week of patient coaxing finally paid off when Cosmic walked into the building where his food and carrier were waiting. Mick was able to safely secure him and call the ecstatic family.

Emotional Family Reunion at Toddington Services

On the evening of Wednesday 5 June, Mick personally drove Cosmic to Toddington Services for the long-awaited reunion with his family.

“We cannot believe we got him back. We are all so, so happy. Mick was wonderful—patient and communicative every day. Cosmic is Prabha’s baby and she was heartbroken when he escaped. Getting Mick’s call saying he was safe was just amazing. Cosmic meowed all the way home. We can’t work out if he was telling us about his adventure or scolding us for leaving him behind!” said Saroja.

This tale of Cosmic’s adventure highlights the dedication and compassion of the National Highways team, who went the extra mile to bring a beloved family pet home safe and sound.
