A shoplifter, Simon Spencer, has been jailed after stealing more than £3,000 worth of goods from multiple supermarkets across Derbyshire between January and June 2024. Officers from Derbyshire Police‘s Force Proactive Team arrested Spencer at Farmfoods in Codnor on 2 June after a months-long investigation and a wanted appeal. Spencer, 51, from no fixed abode, targeted Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Farm Foods, and One Stop stores across Ripley, Alfreton, Derby, Long Eaton, Sawley, Sandiacre and Codnor.
Countywide Theft Spree
Spencer’s offences included a variety of everyday household goods such as dishwasher tablets, food and wine. His thefts spanned six months, affecting several major supermarket chains across Derbyshire, creating significant disruption and financial loss.
Police Manhunt Launched
Following numerous theft incidents and Spencer evading capture, Derbyshire Police launched a wanted appeal. The Force Proactive Team used targeted tactics to locate him, culminating in his arrest while attempting to steal 20 tins of tuna at Farmfoods.
Court Guilty Plea And Sentence
At Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on 4 June, Spencer pleaded guilty to 23 theft charges. He was sentenced to 46 weeks in jail, marking an end to his crime spree across the county.
