EastEnders Shock: Cheryl Fergison Spills on Heather Trott’s Sudden Exit
Former EastEnders favourite Cheryl Fergison has revealed the gut-wrenching moment she found out her character Heather Trott was getting the chop. The lovable, karaoke-obsessed Heather, Shirley Carter’s best mate, met a grim fate in 2012 when she was murdered on screen by Ben Mitchell – sending fans into meltdown.
The Clues That Something Was Up
Cheryl opened up in a candid chat about the subtle signs actors spot before their time’s up on the BBC soap. “I had a feeling it might be coming,” she admitted. “We’d always joke that either you’re going up to talk about your storyline, or you’re part of the culling.”
Typically, cast members get regular chats with producers about their characters’ futures. But Cheryl noticed something was wrong when these meetings suddenly stopped. “That particular week, as Friday approached, I hadn’t had a meeting, and neither had Linda,” she revealed. “I started to realise that because I hadn’t been called in to discuss my character’s future, something was up.”
The dreaded confirmation came when then-boss Brian Kirkwood called her in. “When I walked in, he looked visibly upset. I had an inkling of what was coming. He asked me to sit down, and I knew straight away it wasn’t going to be anything exciting,” Cheryl recalled.
Why Heather Had to Go
Brian delivered the hard truth. The showrunners wanted to push a new storyline centred on Shirley Carter’s grief – which meant Heather had to be killed off. “He explained that the Powers That Be wanted to dive into Shirley dealing with loss, and that meant Heather was going to die,” Cheryl said.
Heather Trott’s Lasting Legacy
Heather Trott remains an iconic EastEnders character, remembered for her quirky charm and close friendship with Shirley. Her shocking murder by Ben Mitchell is still talked about as one of the soap’s most devastating twists.
Since her exit, Cheryl Fergison has kept busy with theatre and TV gigs but looks back fondly on her time of playing Heather. Her revealing insights shed light on the ruthless decision-making behind the scenes where even fan favourites can meet tragic ends.
EastEnders continues to deliver gripping drama on BBC One, captivating viewers after nearly 40 years.
