Van Flies Wrong Way, Hits Taxi
Witnesses say the van ignored police signals near the Chain Bar roundabout and sped the wrong way southbound on the M606 towards Bradford. The crash happened shortly after, involving at least one vehicle head-on.
Major Emergency Response at Scene
- Air Ambulance Medics joined local paramedics and the Hazardous Area Response Team.
- West Yorkshire Police Roads Policing and Armed Response Teams arrived swiftly.
- Fire crews from Cleckheaton, including the Technical Rescue Team, worked to free injured casualties.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed there are five casualties, with three in critical condition.
M606 Remains Shut – Motorists Warned
The motorway is shut both ways, expected to remain closed into the morning. Officers urge drivers to avoid the area and find alternate routes. In a statement, police said:
“At 10:45 p.m. on Monday, a van failed to stop for a marked roads policing unit, then drove the wrong way on the southbound M606 near Chain Bar roundabout, colliding with a taxi. Five casualties were involved, three critically injured. The scene and closures will be in place for an extended period.”
Police Probe Underway
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been informed, as a police vehicle was involved before the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
