Fatal Blaze in Islington Flat Claims One Life
A devastating fire tore through a ground-floor flat on Rotherfield Street just before 1am on Tuesday, 24th January 2023. The blaze left one man dead and another seriously injured.
Massive Emergency Response
The London Fire Brigade scrambled four fire engines and 25 firefighters from Islington, Shoreditch, and Euston stations to the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus battled the flames and managed to rescue a man, who was rushed to hospital by the London Ambulance Service.
Despite the heroic efforts of police, paramedics, and the London Air Ambulance team, another man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Underway
The fire, which destroyed the four-room flat in a residential block, was brought under control by 2.21am. A strong police and fire service presence remained at the site on Tuesday morning, with forensics officers from the London Fire Brigade’s fire investigation unit combing the area.
A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said, “Sadly, a man has died following a flat fire on Rotherfield Street in Islington last night.”
The Met Police have been contacted for more information as the joint investigation continues. The cause of the blaze remains unknown.
