Explosions and Gunfire Rock Caracas Near Presidential Palace
Explosions, heavy gunfire, and drone activity have erupted in central Caracas, sparking fears of a major security breach near the Miraflores Presidential Palace, Venezuela’s government hub. Witnesses reported a serious incident late Monday night, with chaos dominating the city centre.
Drone Alert Sparks Security Clampdown
Social media buzzed with reports of drones flying over Caracas, prompting security forces to fire warning shots. Venezuelan officials treat unauthorised drone flights near sensitive sites as serious threats. The exact number and origin of the drones remain a mystery.
Unconfirmed reports also claim Sukhoi fighter jets took off from Base Aérea Libertador El Libertador (BAEL), heading toward the capital, though no official confirmation has been made.
Streets Locked Down Amid Heavy Security Presence
Armed forces quickly secured streets around the palace, setting up checkpoints and patrols. Residents described a tense atmosphere, with security forces and armed groups stationed at key points across the city. While some diplomats and foreign nationals urged caution, no curfew or evacuation order has been issued.
The Venezuelan government insisted the situation was under control, attributing the chaos to unauthorised drones and police firing warning shots. Officials confirmed there were no injuries reported so far.
The White House denied any US involvement, responding to rampant online speculation about foreign interference in the incident.
Political Turmoil Stokes Chavista Divisions
Amid the unrest, cracks are appearing within the Chavista ranks. Members of local Chavista community councils voiced anger over recent remarks by Vice President and interim President Delcy Rodríguez. Their gripe: her comments about cooperation with the United States, seen by hardliners as a betrayal of Bolivarian ideals.
This has fuelled growing distrust within the Chavista movement, with some activists demanding a return to “true Bolivarian power”. The political tension adds another layer to Venezuela’s already fragile landscape.
Calm or Precursor to Chaos?
Authorities maintain Caracas is calm and investigations into the drone activity continue. However, the combination of explosions, gunfire, military movements, and political infighting is triggering alarm both locally and abroad.
Experts warn the coming hours will be crucial in revealing whether this was a contained scare or a sign of deepening instability in Venezuela’s government and security forces.
