Far-Right Rally Sparks Tensions Outside Portsmouth Border Office
Nearly 50 far-right protesters gathered outside the UK Border Agency office near Portsmouth’s ferry port, igniting a spike in local tensions. Their rally prompted a swift counter-protest from anti-racist activists and a heavy police presence.
Clashes Averted as Police Step In
The far-right group, waving banners and shouting slogans around noon, immediately drew concern from community leaders and authorities. Anti-racism campaigners quickly mobilised nearby to challenge their message.
Portsmouth police anticipated trouble and deployed extra officers to the scene. They formed a barrier between the two groups, keeping a close watch to prevent violence.
“Our priority is public safety and preventing any escalation of violence,” a Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said.
Community Leaders Condemn Extremists
Local figures condemned the far-right demonstration, stressing unity and tolerance in Portsmouth.
“Portsmouth is a diverse and welcoming city,” Councillor Susan Hart said. “We won’t let a small group of extremists sow hate and division.”
Situation Remains Tense but Peaceful
The UK Border Agency office, a hotspot for protests over immigration and asylum claims, once again became a flashpoint today. Despite the risk of clashes, both protests remained largely peaceful.
Police confirmed no major incidents but warned that officer deployment will continue throughout the evening to keep order.
Authorities urge the public to avoid the area and to report any relevant information to police to ensure community safety.
