The blaze has engulfed two vehicles and part of the basement underneath a block of flats, sparking massive emergency action.
Heroic Rescues Using Fire Escape Hoods
Borough Commander Lee Sandy revealed that around 20 people escaped before firefighters arrived. Crews rescued six people in total—four with fire escape hoods and two wearing breathing apparatus.
“Firefighters are working hard to bring the fire under control,” said Sandy.
All rescued victims are receiving treatment on the scene from London Ambulance Service teams.
Major Road Closed as Firefighters Battle Blaze
Southwark Bridge Road remains closed while crews work tirelessly to secure the area. Authorities urge drivers to find alternative routes to avoid delays.
What Are Fire Escape Hoods?
- Provide up to 15 minutes of protection from deadly fire gases like carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide.
- Can be worn by conscious or unconscious people, with extra hoods available if longer protection is needed.
- They do not supply oxygen but filter toxic smoke to aid breathing in emergencies.
The London Fire Brigade received 29 calls about the blaze since being alerted just after 12:50am. Firefighters from Lambeth, Dowgate, Old Kent Road, and nearby stations are battling the flames as the night unfolds.
