The transformer, located behind a gate on York Street, was billowing heavy smoke just after 11.20am. Emergency crews promptly closed the road to keep the public safe. The source of the smoke was oil inside the transformer that caught fire but thankfully burned itself out quickly.
Fire Crews Tackle Blaze and Pass the Baton
A fire and rescue spokesman confirmed two fire engines from Newport attended the scene. “Firefighters are investigating the cause and have contacted the power company,” they said. By 12.15pm, the fire crews had lifted the cordon and reopened the road, handing the situation over to the electricity provider to fully resolve.
No injuries were reported and officials confirmed there’s no ongoing threat from the incident.
