Freezer Fire Wrecks Basement of East London Maisonette

A blaze broke out in the basement of a split-level maisonette last night, leaving part of it badly damaged. Two residents managed to escape before firefighters arrived, with no injuries reported.

Accidental Fire Linked to Freezer Fault

The London Fire Brigade said the fire was accidental and caused by a faulty freezer. A spokesperson warned: “If your white goods start making a strange noise, don’t ignore it. Always unplug and call a qualified technician. Most fires like this aren’t your fault, but registering your appliances is vital so manufacturers can alert you to any safety issues.”

Swift Fire Brigade Response

The Brigade got the call at 6.31pm. Within just over an hour—by 7.47pm—the fire was under control. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Poplar, Plaistow, Millwall, and Shadwell rushed to the scene to tackle the flames.
