A mother duck and her eight ducklings found themselves in a pickle on a rooftop in Reading – but thanks to heroic firefighters, their feathered fate took a happy turn.

Ducks Trapped High Above Minster Street

Around midday on April 23, the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service got a call about ducks stuck on a building in Minster Street. Fire crews from Caversham Road rushed to the scene and discovered the family stranded and unable to fly down safely.

Delicate Rooftop Rescue

Using specialist gear, the team carefully rescued all nine birds without a scratch. Onlookers gathered, clapping as the ducks were gently brought back to solid ground.

Safe Hands with Swan Lifeline Charity

The rescued family were handed over to Swan Lifeline, a local charity that cares for and rehabilitates waterfowl. The charity reported the ducks are healthy and will be released back into the wild soon.

“We’re always happy to assist in situations like these where animals are in distress. The safety of all lives—human or animal—is a priority for us,” said a Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.

This quirky rescue brightened the day for many in the town, reminding us that firefighters don’t just tackle flames—they save lives of all kinds.
