Leicestershire Flood Alert: Localised River Flooding After Heavy Rain
Heavy Rain Sparks Flood Warnings Across England
Recent downpours have triggered minor but localised river flooding in Leicestershire. Other areas, including parts of Lincolnshire, could see similar issues soon. Despite the soggy spell, the overall flood risk nationwide stays low.
Last week’s relentless rain caused river and surface water flooding in central England, Yorkshire, and the North East, hitting thousands of homes. By Wednesday afternoon, officials had issued 36 flood warnings—meaning flooding is expected—and 102 flood alerts indicating possible flooding.
Environment Agency Battles Rising Waters
The Environment Agency (EA) reported that about 1,008 properties have already flooded. However, their swift action protected some 22,000 more from damage. EA teams are working hard on the ground, clearing blockages, managing high water levels, and supporting local flood response efforts.
Chris Wilding, Flood Duty Manager at the EA, said: “The overall flood risk is going down, but recent rains mean minor local river flooding is possible in Leicestershire. We urge everyone to plan journeys carefully and follow emergency advice. Never drive through flood water—it’s often deeper than it looks, and just 30cm of flowing water can float your car.”
The public is urged to register for free flood warnings and keep up with the latest updates via the Environment Agency’s social media channels.
Government Steps In: Minister Visits Flood Zones
Floods Minister Emma Hardy and Environment Secretary Steve Reed recently toured affected areas. Hardy met local residents in Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard, while Reed received briefings in Northamptonshire about flood protection efforts.
Emma Hardy, who has personal experience with flooding, said: “I know firsthand how devastating flooding can be. My thoughts are with residents and businesses affected across the country. I want to thank the Environment Agency and partners for their vital work protecting communities.”
The government remains committed to boosting flood defences and speeding up emergency response through its Floods Resilience Taskforce.
Stay Alert and Stay Safe
The Environment Agency reminds everyone to keep an eye on weather forecasts, monitor flood risk in their area, and follow emergency instructions—especially avoiding flooded roads. The last thing anyone needs is to get caught out in dangerous floodwaters.
With heavy rain still a threat, the EA, local authorities, and government are on high alert to protect communities and keep the public informed during this wet spell.
