Keir Starmer Slams Public Purse with £250k Travel Spree as CPS Chief
Starmer Socked Taxpayers for Business Class Jet-Setting
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has been branded a “career freeloader” after it emerged he racked up nearly £250,000 in travel expenses during his time as head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The jaw-dropping total more than triples that of his successor.
Records show Starmer splashed over £42,500 of taxpayers’ cash on lavish business class flights across the globe. Just trips to Washington ate up close to £20,000, including one flight costing a staggering £7,000-plus. Other expensive jaunts saw him jet off to hotspots like Hong Kong, Bangkok, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Ghana, and Sierra Leone for another £20,000-plus.
Ex-DPP Blew £236k on Swanky Flights and Chauffeurs
During his five years as Director of Public Prosecutions, Sir Keir spent £236,485 on flights, luxury hotels, posh meals, and chauffeur-driven cars, a Freedom of Information request revealed. Early days in his role saw him blow £23,000 in just two months.
This was all on top of his hefty salary of nearly £200,000 and a pension pot topping £336,000 over his tenure. By contrast, his successor Alison Saunders managed to keep travel expenses to a modest £67,000 between 2013 and 2018.
Freebies Galore Spark Fury
The outrage doesn’t stop at travel. Starmer has also received freebies worth a whopping £107,145 since becoming Labour leader in December 2019 — more than any other MP. Former Tory MP Brendan Clarke-Smith slammed the leader, saying: “It would appear he’s a career freeloader.”
Public Spending Under Fire
The expenses revelations have sparked fierce criticism amid the nation’s cost-of-living crisis. Campaigners and critics argue that Starmer’s lavish spending is an insult to the public purse and raises serious questions about accountability and judgement.
