FSA Cracks Down on Glycerol in Slush Ice Drinks for Kids

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued fresh guidelines warning against selling slush-ice drinks containing glycerol to children aged four and under. Manufacturers are also urged to tell retailers not to offer free refills to kids under ten. The move aims to tackle health risks linked to too much glycerol consumption in young children.

Health Scare Spurs Updated Rules

The new advice follows an FSA risk assessment revealing that glycerol can cause headaches and sickness in children under four. The decision was triggered by two serious cases in Scotland, where toddlers were hospitalised after glycerol poisoning in 2021 and 2022.

“Parents need to be aware of the risks, especially when children consume several slush drinks quickly,” said Adam Hardgrave, FSA Head of Additives. “Some mild symptoms might be going unnoticed or misattributed.”

What’s Glycerol and Why the Fuss?

  • Glycerol creates the signature slush texture as a sugar alternative.
  • The FSA advises using the smallest amount possible to achieve this effect.
  • While glycerol exists in other foods, slush ice drinks have much higher levels.

The FSA’s worst-case test assumed a child drinks a 350ml slush with 50,000 mg/L of glycerol—enough to push kids under five past safety limits. Older children are less at risk since glycerol’s impact ties closely to body weight.

Future Moves: Monitoring and Possible Stricter Controls

The FSA will watch how well these guidelines are adopted. If industry lowers glycerol limits, rules may be tightened further to keep kids safe from hidden dangers in their favourite slush treats.
