UK Scrambles Extra Evac Flights as Lebanon Chaos Deepens
The UK government has sprung into action, chartering extra flights to evacuate British nationals stuck in Lebanon amid escalating violence and chaos. A “limited number” of flights are already in motion, organised by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to get Britons out fast.
First Flight Flies Out with 150 Passengers
The initial evacuation flight left Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport on Wednesday, carrying 150 passengers. More flights are scheduled to depart starting today, with operations continuing as long as security allows. The FCDO says they’re working with partners to boost capacity on all commercial and charter flights for British nationals desperate to leave.
- About 700 troops, plus Foreign Office and Home Office staff including Border Force officers, have been deployed to Cyprus to support emergency planning.
- The government urges all Brits still in Lebanon to register with the FCDO immediately to receive updates and secure a seat on evacuation flights.
- Those without confirmed bookings are warned against travelling to the airport amid the tense situation on the ground.
Foreign Secretary Issues Urgent Warning
Foreign Secretary David Lammy underscored the danger, saying: “Recent events have demonstrated the volatility of the situation in Lebanon. The safety of British nationals continues to be our number one priority. That’s why we are announcing additional chartered flights to help those who want to leave.”
He added: “I urge all British nationals still in Lebanon to register with the FCDO and leave the country immediately.”
What Britons in Lebanon Must Do Now
The UK government’s top priority is clear — get British citizens out safely. With flights filling fast, officials stress the importance of prompt registration and compliance with government advice:
- Register your presence in Lebanon with the FCDO now if you haven’t already.
- Wait for confirmation before heading to the airport.
- Follow all official safety and travel instructions carefully.
