Gymnastics Ireland Slams Racism After Medal Snub Scandal
Gymnastics Ireland (GI) has finally issued a full apology following a shocking incident where a young Black gymnast was allegedly skipped during a medal presentation at a Dublin event in 2022. The controversy erupted last week after a video of the moment went viral on social media, sparking outrage across the gymnastics world.

The clip, shared widely on Friday, shows an official seemingly passing over the young Black athlete while handing out medals to a line of mostly white girls. The gymnast looked confused and hurt by the snub, prompting fierce backlash online.

In a statement on Monday, GI admitted: “This should not have happened, and for that, we are deeply sorry.” The federation called the incident “heartbreaking” and stressed, “There is no room for racism in any sport or at all.” Teammate Jordan Chiles also spoke out, expressing deep pain over what unfolded.
Official’s “Honest Error” Defence Falls Flat
At first, Gymnastics Ireland branded the official’s actions an “honest error.” Yet GI acknowledged a complaint was made by the gymnast’s parents back in March 2022. An independent mediation followed, resulting in a written apology from the official and the gymnast receiving her medal—just not on the day.
However, the gymnast’s mother told the Irish Independent that the outing fell short of justice. She criticised GI for failing to apologise publicly and vowed to escalate the case to the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation in Switzerland.
