Major Incident Shuts Down M27 Near Southampton
Highways England has declared a major incident on the M27, sparking chaos near Southampton. Hampshire Police have shut all lanes in both directions between Junction 5 and Junction 7. Traffic has ground to a halt as emergency services rush to the scene. The incident was reported just before 10pm on Thursday.
Person Jumps from Overbridge, Westbound Carriage Closed
A Highways England spokesman confirmed the westbound carriageway is closed following a person jumping from an overbridge. Police are at the site, but authorities have not yet confirmed the condition of the individual involved.
Traffic Nightmare: Expect Delays and Follow Diversions
The closure is causing at least 30-minute delays westbound. Motorists are warned to expect disruption, longer journey times, and potential reroutes. Highways England urges drivers to:
- Consider alternative routes
- Follow on-road variable message signs
- Allow extra travel time
Suggested diversion: Leave the M27 at Junction 7, follow the hollow black square diversion via the A334 Watts Way, then onto the A27 for around 2 miles to Wide Lane. Continue on Wide Lane (A335) to rejoin the M27 at Junction 5.
