HSE Takes Lead in Investigation of Lambeth Country Show Ride Malfunction

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has officially taken over the investigation into a serious ride malfunction that occurred at the Lambeth Country Show on June 8, 2024, which resulted in injuries to four individuals. The incident, which took place at Brockwell Park in London, initially involved Metropolitan Police as the primary investigative body until the responsibility was transferred to HSE on July 16.

The ride in question is currently undergoing a detailed forensic examination at HSE’s Buxton Science and Research Centre. This step is part of a comprehensive effort to ascertain the cause of the malfunction and to determine if there were any violations of health and safety laws at the time of the incident.

HSE inspector Stacey Gamwell emphasized the seriousness with which the agency is approaching the investigation. We will continue to thoroughly investigate what happened and determine whether there were any breaches of health and safety law at the time of this incident,” Gamwell stated. She assured that once the investigation is complete, HSE will decide whether formal enforcement actions are necessary, in accordance with their enforcement policy.

The agency has been actively communicating with the individuals affected by the incident, ensuring they are kept informed throughout the process. This transition of investigatory leadership from the Metropolitan Police to HSE marks a pivotal move towards focusing on the technical and safety aspects of the event.

The Lambeth Country Show, known for its attractions and entertainment offerings, has come under scrutiny following the accident, prompting calls for stricter safety measures and oversight at public events. The outcome of this investigation is eagerly awaited by attendees, safety advocates, and the event organizers, as it will likely influence future safety protocols at similar events across the UK.
