Black Smoke Erupts from Offshore Wind Turbine Near Great Yarmouth
Chaos erupted off the coast of Great Yarmouth on Tuesday morning as a plume of thick black smoke poured from a wind turbine at The Scroby Sands wind farm. The alarming sight sparked an immediate evacuation of all personnel on site.
No Injuries as Fire Self-Extinguishes
The incident occurred around 10:50 am at the North Sea site, 1.5 miles offshore. RWE, the German operator of the wind farm, confirmed the fire started in the turbine’s nacelle — the top section housing the generator. Astonishingly, the blaze put itself out shortly after igniting, a rare feat for wind turbines.
“It’s incredibly rare for a turbine to catch fire and extinguish itself,” an RWE spokesperson said. Thankfully, no injuries were reported and all workers were safely accounted for following the evacuation.
Safety Measures and Exclusion Zone Enforced
Emergency services were notified immediately. Although no coastguard search and rescue units were deployed, the coastguard kept the area under close watch and suggested a 500-metre exclusion zone around the damaged turbine to keep the public safe.
The incident has thrown a spotlight on the risks of offshore wind power, but RWE reassured that strict safety protocols were followed throughout the evacuation.
Scroby Sands: Powering Over 48,000 Homes
The Scroby Sands wind farm consists of 30 turbines with a total capacity of 60 megawatts—enough to power more than 48,000 homes. Investigations are now underway to uncover the cause of the fire and to ensure the continued safety of this vital renewable energy site.
