King Charles III Crowned in Historic Coronation at Westminster Abbey

The First Coronation Since 1953

King Charles III and Queen Camilla were greeted at Westminster Abbey’s great west door by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who performed the sacred anointing and crowning. This was the first British monarch coronation in 70 years since the late Queen Elizabeth II’s grand ceremony in 1953. Charles is the 40th monarch to be crowned at the Abbey, continuing a royal tradition that began with William the Conqueror in 1066.

Global VIPs and Royal Family in Attendance

The coronation attracted a star-studded crowd including world leaders, prime ministers from overseas realms, foreign monarchs, and extended members of the British royal family. Future kings Prince Charles and Prince George took centre stage during the ceremony. Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were also there to witness the historic event. The Duke of Sussex attended, but the Duchess of Sussex stayed stateside in the US.

Massive Public Celebration Across the UK

Hundreds of thousands are expected to flood the streets and join celebrations nationwide throughout the coronation weekend. Special events and festivities have been planned from coast to coast to mark the momentous occasion.

Thousands Witness Coronation Live

Approximately 3,800 members of the public watched the coronation service and procession from a grandstand outside Buckingham Palace. Representatives from Commonwealth nations also attended. Meanwhile, 400 young charity representatives observed the ceremony from nearby St Margaret’s Church, adding a touching communal spirit to the historic day.
