King Charles III’s Coronation Boosts England’s Great Outdoors

The government has unveiled a trio of grand nature projects to honour the Coronation of King Charles III. Get ready for a renamed England Coast Path, a fresh series of National Nature Reserves, and brand-new Coronation Woods across the country.

Coast Path Transformed Into ‘King Charles III England Coast Path’

  • England’s longest national trail is rechristened the King Charles III England Coast Path.
  • Stretching 2,700 miles, it will hug the entire English coastline, showcasing some of the nation’s most breathtaking seaside views.
  • Natural England and local authorities have already opened 794 miles, and the full route will be walkable by the end of 2024.
  • From Northumberland to Cumbria via Cornwall, walkers can explore stunning coastal countryside like never before.

Introducing the King’s Series of National Nature Reserves

  • Five new major National Nature Reserves (NNRs) will be declared each year for five years – that’s a whopping 25 new reserves.
  • The first reserve, Lincolnshire Coronation Coast NNR, will be unveiled this summer, spanning over 12 square miles of dunes, saltmarshes, mudflats, and marshes.
  • It’s a haven for rare wildlife including breeding birds and natterjack toads.
  • Future reserves are tipped to include The Mendip Hills, Moccas Park, Ingleborough, and Lullington, cementing King Charles’ legacy in nature recovery.

Coronation Woods: A Green Gift for the Nation

  • Forestry England will create new woodlands between April 2023 and March 2025, the first ever to mark King Charles’ Coronation.
  • Defra is also handing out up to £2.5 million to fund tree planting in local communities nationwide.
  • Local groups, councils, and housing associations can plant trees, orchards, and small woodlands, allowing people to connect with nature on their doorstep.

Environment Secretary Praises King’s Green Vision

“The King is a dedicated champion of nature in our country. He has led efforts towards sustainable farming and raised awareness about environmental education,” said Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey.

“The Coronation ushers in a new chapter where nature and the public will benefit from these lasting legacies for years to come.”

As Prince of Wales, King Charles has tirelessly supported wildlife charities and encouraged businesses to tackle climate change. More than 500 CEOs back his Sustainable Markets Initiative, including leaders of major global financial firms.

With this ambitious Environmental Improvement Plan, the UK aims to be the first generation to leave the environment in better shape than we found it. And thanks to these Coronation projects, even more Brits will get outside to enjoy the country’s incredible wildlife and landscapes.
