Refugee Killed by Train in Calais as Authorities Crack Down
French police harassment and evictions have left refugees in Calais scrambling for shelter on tiny scraps of land at the town’s edges.
Fences Shrink Refugee Shelter Areas to Dangerous Wastelands
More and more scrubland where refugees lived has been fenced off. Many are now forced to camp on hazardous wastelands, some dangerously close to train tracks.
Tragic Death Highlights Refugees’ Perilous Situation
Last night, a young refugee was struck and killed by a train travelling from Dunkirk at around 7.15pm while walking along train tracks to return to his tent.
He was with a friend, who escaped unharmed. Emergency teams, including 13 firefighters, arrived swiftly but could not save him.
This death marks the fourth refugee fatality in Calais this year, underscoring the desperate and dangerous conditions they endure.
