Man Turns Up at Elland Road Police Station on Speeding ‘E-Bike’ – But It’s No Bicycle!

A routine visit to Elland Road Police Station took a wild twist when a man rocked up on what looked like a souped-up electric bike — only for officers to discover it was packing serious power under the hood.

The chap had popped in over an unrelated issue, but the Leeds District Off Road Bike Team couldn’t help but notice the unusual ride he arrived on. What they found next raised more than a few eyebrows.

Illegal Modifications Reveal Bike’s True Speed Demon Status

Closer inspection showed the ‘e-bike’ had been heavily modified to resemble a motorcycle rather than a simple pedal-assist bike. This wasn’t your average battery-powered cycle.

A roadside speed test clocked the vehicle at a blistering 61.5mph — smashing the UK’s legal e-bike speed limit of just 15.5mph.

Because of these upgrades, the bike no longer qualified as an e-bike under the law. It should have been insured, taxed, and ridden by someone with a proper licence. The police are now taking action as this case unfolds.

Police Issue Stark Warning to E-Bike Owners

Authorities are urging electric bike users to know the rules. Bikes with throttles, powerful motors, or that can easily smash past 15.5mph assistance might legally be considered mopeds or motorcycles.

Failing to follow these regulations can lead to vehicle seizure, hefty fines, or even prosecution.

“If it looks like a motorcycle, performs like one, and has been modified beyond legal e-bike standards—it’s no longer an e-bike,” said a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson.

What You Must Know About E-Bike Laws in the UK

  • Legal e-bikes have motors capped at 250 watts and maximum assisted speeds of 15.5mph.
  • The motor must kick in only when the rider pedals. Full throttle control is banned.
  • Bikes exceeding these limits are classed as motor vehicles. They must be registered, insured, taxed, and the rider must hold a valid licence.

Stick to the rules or risk losing your ride and facing legal heat.
