Klopp hails Arsenal fans for respectful silence at Emirates tribute
Respect at the Emirates
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on Arsenal supporters for their respectful silence during the minute’s silence at Friday night’s Premier League clash. The German gaffer was visibly moved by their complete quiet, honouring the 97 lives lost in the Hillsborough disaster.
Contrasts with disgraceful chanting
The heartfelt tribute comes just days after Manchester City and Chelsea were forced to apologise. Supporters from both clubs sparked outrage by singing offensive songs referencing the tragedy. Klopp condemned this “tragedy chanting” as vile and called for its eradication, comparing it to racist and sexist abuse that has no place in football.
Campaign to criminalise tragedy chants gains momentum
Survivors and families of Hillsborough remain deeply hurt by the insensitive chanting. An online petition demanding that tragedy chanting become a criminal offence has racked up over 12,000 signatures. Backing the drive are former Liverpool striker John Aldridge and Joe Blott, chairman of Liverpool fan group Spirit of Shankly.
Working group tackles offensive chants through education
Blott sits on a dedicated working group alongside reps from the Premier League, FA, EFL, Manchester United, Liverpool, Leeds and the Football Supporters Association. Their aim: to stamp out tragedy chanting through education and awareness, helping fans grasp the terrible impact of their words. While existing laws like the Public Order Act can help, this group says education is key to wiping out such vile chanting for good.
