London’s ULEZ Zone Hits Whole City This August
Get ready, Londoners! The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will spread across the entire capital from August 29. The scheme, aimed at slashing toxic air pollution, will operate every single day of the year—except Christmas Day.
ULEZ Expansion: What You Need to Know
- Currently, ULEZ covers only inside the North and South Circular roads.
- From late August, it will extend to all of Greater London.
- Daily, about 160,000 cars and 42,000 vans are expected to face the £12.50 charge.
- The charge depends on nitrogen dioxide emissions; diesel vehicles registered after 2016 dodge the fee, while most petrol cars registered before 2006 are exempt.
Drivers can quickly check whether their vehicle is affected by entering their registration on TfL’s official website.
Mayor Khan: ‘Public Health Over Politics’
“Air pollution is making Londoners sick from cradle to grave,” Mayor Sadiq Khan said. “It causes heart disease, lung disease, dementia, and asthma.”
“Expanding ULEZ London-wide was not an easy decision. It would have been easy for me to kick the can down the road. But in the end, public health takes precedence over political expediency.”
The mayor also highlighted that rising living costs weighed heavily on the decision. To soften the blow, he unveiled a £110 million scrappage scheme to help low-income Londoners, disabled people, small businesses, and charities scrap or retrofit older, polluting vehicles.
Public Transport Boost and Cleaner London Ahead
Alongside the ULEZ rollout, TfL has committed to ramping up bus services in outer London. The goal: push more people onto greener public transport and keep London’s air cleaner for everyone.
