London Fire Brigade Spread Christmas Cheer Across the Capital

This festive season, London’s brave firefighters have swapped their hoses for holiday spirit, lighting up communities across the city with acts of kindness and support.

Firefighters Deliver Presents and Raise Funds for Sick Kids

Across London, fire crews visited hospitals and children’s wards to bring festive joy where it’s needed most. East Greenwich Green Watch paid a heartwarming Christmas Day visit to the Safari Ward at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, raising £500 for children’s presents.

A week earlier, Lambeth Red Watch showed up at Evelina London Children’s Hospital dressed as elves and Santa, handing out donated gifts to the young patients.

“We wanted to make the day special,” said Station Officer Adam Hills, “so we decked out our fire engine as a grotto and surprised the children with presents collected from local businesses and colleagues.”

Meanwhile, Peckham firefighters raised funds and gathered gifts for children in Southwark’s Refuge Charity shelters, with generous donations from Sainsbury’s Dulwich helping fill the stockings.

The Pyjama Appeal: Keeping Sick Kids Comfortable

Station Officer Steve Border from the Brigade’s Positive Improvement Team has been spearheading a unique cause with Children’s Hospital Pyjamas, a charity the Brigade backs since 2019.

“My stepdaughter battled childhood leukaemia, so this cause is close to my heart. I noticed the charity struggled with storage, so I offered space in a fire station to help,” Steve explained. “A simple pair of pyjamas can make a sick child feel comforted during their toughest times, especially at Christmas.”

Thanks to their efforts, over 200 pyjamas have been collected, with Forest Hill Fire Station acting as the central hub, supported by teams across Stratford, Lewisham, Wembley, and Hammersmith.

Coats, Toys and Food: London Fire Brigade Warms Hearts and Homes

Station Officer Paul Anstey and Brixton Blue Watch organised a massive gift appeal with Kings College Children’s Hospital, delivering over 100 presents to children spending Christmas in care. Paul also led the Brigade’s Wrap Up campaign, which collected a staggering 3,500 winter coats from 13 fire stations.

“The freezing weather can be cruel,” said Paul. “We’re proud to keep vulnerable people – and even their pets – warm when it matters most.”

Bexley borough hit a decade milestone with its toy campaign, gathering 3,000 gifts for local vulnerable children. Leftover presents went to charities Solace and Women’s Aid.

Park Royal firefighters teamed with local businessman Daniel Healy to tirelessly support Brent Food Bank. Daniel’s annual £10,000 donation helps stock shelves for those in need, with the Brigade acting as a crucial link in the chain.

“We’ve donated over £40,000 worth of goods since 2019,” said Sub Officer John Stroker. “It’s about supporting our community all year round.”

Community Parties and Carol Singing Bring Festive Spirit

At Acton Fire Station, over 50 elderly guests enjoyed a Christmas party organised by Sub Officer Kim Jerray-Silver. Fire Cadets served food and drinks, while a local choir provided festive entertainment.

“Many older folks are lonely, so we arrange transport and invite them in to brighten their day,” Kim said. “With support from Ealing Community Transport and Age Concern, we reach more people every year.”

Bexley also held a festive tea party featuring live music and classic hits from the 50s and 60s for around 25 senior locals.

The Brigade’s Choir was in full voice this December, performing at a packed Carol Service at Westminster Cathedral to raise nearly £3,000 for the Firefighters Charity. They also joined the Blue Light Symphony Choir and Brass Band for carols outside Soho Fire Station, adorned in firefighter tunics to honour their frontline colleagues.

Deputy Commissioner Praises Brigade’s Festive Efforts

Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Smith said: “A huge thank you to all our firefighters, control officers, and support teams working through Christmas. Besides emergency readiness, I’m proud of how we’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with London’s communities, welcoming people into our stations and supporting important charities.”

London Fire Brigade’s festive mission shows the true spirit of the season—courage, kindness, and community all blazing bright in the capital.
