London Fire Commissioner Hails 2023 Heroes and Sets Ambitious 2024 Goals
The London Fire Commissioner has thanked firefighters, control officers, and support staff for their relentless work over the festive season, ensuring Londoners stayed safe. Wishing everyone a happy and secure new year, he praised their dedication and commitment throughout the challenges of 2023.
#ChargeSafe Campaign Tackles E-Bike Battery Blaze Crisis
2023 started on a tragic note with the death of 21-year-old Sofia Duarte in an e-bike battery fire. Her heartbreaking story became the cornerstone of the London Fire Brigade’s #ChargeSafe campaign, launched in March. The Commissioner expressed deep gratitude to Sofia’s family and friends for championing awareness of the lurking dangers behind e-bike and e-scooter batteries.
Fires involving these batteries have skyrocketed, becoming London’s fastest-growing fire threat — with a blaze every two days on average. The LFB’s hard-hitting public education has paid off, with 58% of Londoners aware of the risks by September 2023.
Looking forward, the LFB will push for tougher regulations in collaboration with the Home Office, Electrical Safety First, and the Office for Product Safety and Standards to keep Londoners safe from these hazards.
Grenfell Lessons and Cutting-Edge Equipment Drive Fire Safety
The LFB is gearing up to complete all outstanding recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry’s first phase. Armed with findings from the upcoming second phase report, the brigade is determined to prevent a repeat of that devastating fire.
In addition, following the Manchester Arena Inquiry, new high-tech gear is on its way: integrated radios, upgraded breathing apparatus, and state-of-the-art Command Units will empower firefighters and incident commanders in emergencies. A robust training programme and new protective equipment are also being rolled out.
Making London Safer: From Homes to the River Thames
London Fire Brigade has revamped home fire safety visits, hitting high-risk individuals within four hours. The popular Home Fire Safety Checker tool saw a surge in use with personalised advice making a real difference.
The brigade is also stepping up wildfire response amid the climate crisis with new equipment and training. On the waterways, two high-tech riverboats—Tanner and Errington—are now fully operational, patrolling the River Thames to tackle incidents swiftly.
To top it off, LFB is improving its workplace culture with fresh leadership training and core values centred on service, integrity, teamwork, equity, courage, and learning.
As the Commissioner summed up, the London Fire Brigade is evolving fast to better protect its communities. With passion and energy, 2024 will see the brigade press ahead in its mission to keep London safe.
