Second Critically Endangered Gorilla Baby Thrills London Zoo

London Zoo is buzzing after welcoming a second critically endangered gorilla baby in just weeks. The tiny newcomer, born to mum Effie, arrived at 7:44pm on February 8—only three and a half weeks after the birth of Mjukuu’s baby.

Tense Moments as Newborn Arrives Wrapped in Umbilical Cord

Effie’s labour began around 7:04pm and proved tricky. The newborn arrived still wrapped in its umbilical cord, sparking concern among keepers. But thanks to round-the-clock care, the cord has now safely fallen off, and the baby is thriving.

“Everyone is over the moon,” said Kathryn Sanders, primates section manager. “Effie and her baby kept us on our toes for the first 72 hours as we made sure the cord caused no harm.”

She added, “It was a huge relief to see the baby feeding, moving normally, and those bright eyes peeking out from mum’s arms.”

Newborn Shares Same Dad as January Arrival

The sex of the baby is still unknown. It’s a half-sibling to the January-born infant, both sharing the same father: 19-year-old silverback Kiburi. Kiburi joined London Zoo’s conservation breeding programme from Tenerife in November 2022.

Future Playmates: Gorilla Babies Set to Grow Up Together

Sanders is excited about the duo bonding. “They’ll grow side by side, much like older siblings Alika and Gernot. Having a permanent playmate is brilliant for their development.”

The births highlight London Zoo’s unwavering commitment to saving critically endangered species. Thanks to their dedicated team, these tiny gorillas are a bright beacon of hope for their future.
