M27 Chaos as Jackknifed Lorry Blocks Two Lanes Near Southampton Airport
Two lanes of the M27 in Hampshire remain shut between junctions 7 and 5 after a lorry carrying a shipping container jackknifed early this morning.
Emergency Rush to Scene at 2am
Emergency crews rushed to the scene just after 2am, finding the lorry tractor and trailer slammed across lanes two and three. A car was trapped underneath the tractor unit, sparking a major rescue operation.
Fire teams from Hightown, Eastleigh, and Redbridge deployed cutting gear to free the trapped driver. They were rushed to hospital by ambulance. Rescue Support units and South Central Ambulance’s Hazardous Area Response Teams backed up the effort.
Heavy Recovery Underway with Specialist Equipment
Westbound lanes two and three, plus eastbound lane three, remain closed as heavy lifting crews from Boarhunt Garage in Fareham work to clear the wreckage.
The lorry smashed through numerous barriers on the central reservation, but thankfully these did their job – preventing the truck from crossing into oncoming traffic and causing an even worse disaster.
Traffic Impact and Investigation
Hampshire Roads Policing report no major delays beyond the crash site for now. The condition of the drivers involved remains unknown as investigations continue.
