New London Airport to Rise from Manston Ashes in 2028 with £500m Overhaul

A brand-new London airport is set to blast off in 2028 at the former Manston Airport site in Kent, after a massive £500 million makeover. The revamped hub will boast the UK’s 11th-longest civilian runway, stretching a mighty 2,748 metres (9,020 feet) – perfect for cargo planes and low-cost short-haul flights.

From Wartime RAF Base to Modern Aviation Hub

Manston Airport, once a crucial RAF stronghold throughout both World Wars, is set for a dramatic comeback. Nestled on the Isle of Thanet in Kent, its strategic location and long runway made it a military powerhouse. However, commercial flights stopped for good back in May 2014, leaving the site in limbo despite many revival attempts.

RiverOak Plans Budget Flights & Cargo Boom

Since snapping up the site in July 2019, RiverOak Strategic Partners is steering the rebirth. Board director Tony Freudmann told UKNIP:

“We’re in talks with several short-haul carriers and see strong demand for low-cost flights to Europe. We believe Manston can play a vital role in the UK’s airport capacity strategy – especially post-Brexit and post-pandemic.”

RiverOak’s vision is clear: turn Manston into a dual hub for freight logistics and budget holidaymakers, easing the squeeze on London’s overcrowded airports.

Job Creation and Freight Relief at the Forefront

The £500 million investment is expected to create thousands of local jobs and boost cargo capacity across southeast England. Construction is already well underway on revamped terminals, cargo zones, and runway upgrades to handle increasing freight demand.
