Shocking Mass Grave of 300+ Infants Found in Oldham Cemetery

A chilling discovery at Royton Cemetery in Oldham has sent shockwaves through the community. Over 300 bodies, mainly infants and young children, have been unearthed in a mass grave. The grim find was made by a local woman searching for her brothers who died in 1962.

Nearly Half Were Stillborn Babies

Local councillors Maggie Hurley and Jade Hughes revealed the heartbreaking details: out of the 303 bodies uncovered, 146 were stillborn babies, and 128 were infants and young children. This shocking revelation sheds light on a dark decade-long practice where stillborn babies were taken from families without any consultation.

“It’s a stark injustice that parents were denied the fundamental right to 1 their babies, a right that should be inherent and unquestionable,” said Councillor Hurley. She added that the woman who found the grave was left “in tears” and felt “a profound sense of loss and injustice.”

Incomplete Records Fuel Concern

This isn’t the first mass grave discovered at Royton Cemetery. Worryingly, only 147 of the 303 bodies have been positively identified by name so far. Authorities are racing to match cemetery records to the remains, highlighting the glaring gaps in historical documentation.

Calls for Justice and Recognition Grow Louder

The findings have reignited the painful debate over how stillbirths and neonatal deaths were handled throughout much of the 20th century. Until the mid-1980s, many parents were kept in the dark about their child’s death and burial. Some were even urged to move on quickly, as if their loss never happened.

Families and campaigners are now demanding proper recognition, updated records, and lasting justice to ensure this tragic chapter is never forgotten.
