UK Firms Join Forces to Flood NHS with PPE

Millions of personal protective equipment (PPE) items are set to reach NHS and social care workers across the UK, thanks to a new wave of innovative partnerships with top companies. The government revealed that some of Britain’s biggest names, including Amazon, Jaguar Land Rover, the Royal Mint, and eBay, are stepping up to the plate—without costing taxpayers a penny extra.

Big Brands Back NHS Frontline

Following a government call for UK businesses to use their manufacturing power to tackle soaring PPE demand, over 200 manufacturers have been identified. Contracts are underway to produce more than 25 million PPE items and deliver 12 million square metres of specialist fabric for gowns, gloves, and aprons.

Deliveries have already begun. For instance, weekly shipments include 2.5 million aprons and 50,000 bottles of hand sanitiser. Firms are speeding through regulatory checks and testing so frontline staff get their vital kit fast.

Matt Hancock Hails “Phenomenal” Effort

“The support from businesses who accepted this challenge has been phenomenal,” said Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock.

“We are working with over 1,000 businesses to build a British manufacturing base that will deliver tens of millions of extra PPE items in the coming weeks. I want to thank Lord Deighton for leading this national effort, and everyone who has stepped up.”

Leading Companies Lend a Hand

  • Royal Mint: Supplying 1.9 million face visors over six months, with 54,000 arriving weekly.
  • Amazon: Using its global sourcing power to support PPE supply chains.
  • eBay & Clipper Logistics: Launching a platform for care providers to order PPE, shipped via Royal Mail.
  • Survitec: Starting gown production from early June.
  • DTR Medical: Delivering 1.3 million visors, first batch due next week.
  • Bollé Safety: Manufacturing 6.5 million protective visors during the pandemic.
  • Jaguar Land Rover: Producing 14,000 visors weekly for healthcare staff.
  • Don & Low: Crafting 12 million square metres of fabric for gowns, with first shipment imminent.
  • Burberry: Making non-surgical gowns in Castleford, plus sourcing masks through its supply chain. The company has already donated over 100,000 PPE pieces to NHS and healthcare charities.
  • Ineos: Delivering about 174,000 hand sanitiser bottles each week to NHS hospitals.

Lord Paul Deighton, PPE adviser, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many companies stepping forward. We’re engaging with over 1,000 firms and encourage more to join the fight. Together, we can deliver the PPE our healthcare workers desperately need.”

Backing the Government’s National PPE Plan

These fresh collaborations bolster the government’s national PPE plan, which includes a dedicated distribution network linking the NHS, industry, and armed forces. A 24-hour helpline also reports PPE shortages to ensure no frontline worker is left unprotected.

With these powerhouse partnerships and continued efforts, Britain’s NHS and social care staff will be better equipped to face the ongoing health crisis.
