British Embassy and Local Brewery Brew Charity Beer to Fight Hunger in Paraguay
The British Embassy in Asuncion teamed up with craft brewery The Hop to launch a special charity beer, “El Embajador” (The Ambassador). Proceeds from sales during September and October will help fuel soup kitchens in Luque and Limpio.
A Brew with a Cause
The Hop’s owner José Duarte pitched the idea to support communities hit hardest by COVID-19 through a new craft beer. The campaign brings solidarity to the forefront at a time when help is desperately needed.
The beer was officially unveiled on August 13, with Ambassador Matthew Hedges and embassy staff joining a live Instagram broadcast. The Ambassador confirmed all non-profit sales profits would go directly to the “Kuña Guapa” and “El bosque restaurador” soup kitchens.
“This idea represents an act of solidarity in trying times. When there is a willingness from the involved parties to try to help, these things come together,” said José Duarte.
El Embajador: A Toast to the Outgoing Ambassador
The beer’s name, El Embajador, was chosen by popular vote on Twitter as a tribute to Ambassador Matthew Hedges, who was ending his mission in Paraguay.
The design features the red dragon and colours of the Welsh flag, the Ambassador’s homeland. This session IPA blends traditional British brewing styles with a modern twist—bitter but low in alcohol. English and American hops give it a smooth herbal and fruity aroma.
The brew will be sold in 500ml bottles and as refillable growlers at The Hop’s bar and will remain on the menu even after the fundraising campaign ends.
“I invite you all to collaborate with this project, and to try this delicious beer. Cheers!” said Ambassador Hedges at the launch.
