France, Italy, and Spain slam Israel for attacking UN peacekeepers in Lebanon
European powers hit out at Israel’s “serious violations”
France, Italy, and Spain have issued a blistering joint statement accusing Israel of “seriously violating” international humanitarian law. They condemned Israel for targeting UN peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon, calling the attacks “unjustifiable” and demanding an immediate halt.
Peacekeepers injured in Naqoura under fire
The outcry follows recent incidents in the Lebanese town of Naqoura, where several UN peacekeepers were injured. The trio expressed “outrage” at these attacks, labelling them a breach of Israel’s commitments under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
“We recall that all peacekeepers must be protected and reiterate our praise for the continued and indispensable commitment of UNIFIL troops/personnel in this very challenging context,” the statement said.
UNIFIL mission crucial amid rising tensions
UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, has been deployed since 1978 to maintain peace along the Israel-Lebanon border. The European countries stressed the vital role of UNIFIL amid escalating hostilities.
They pressed for an immediate ceasefire to defuse the volatile situation, ramping up international pressure on Israel over its military tactics in Lebanon.
