UK roads set for chaos as 15 million drivers hit the highways this weekend

Dover Delays Return: Long Queues Back on the Cards

With around 15 million drivers expected on the move, Saturday’s roads are gearing up to be the busiest this year. Trouble has already hit the Port of Dover, where Thursday saw fresh delays due to “high volumes of traffic.”

Dover, which endured brutal delays of over 14 hours last weekend, reported queues of around 90 minutes early Thursday morning, ferry operator DFDS revealed on Twitter. Thankfully, by afternoon, traffic eased and border checks flowed freely.

The port is ramping up extra measures to handle the crush but warned travellers to brace for “a few hours of waiting” during Friday’s peak.

Travel Tips: Don’t Turn Up Early or Without a Booking

  • The Port of Dover urged passengers to avoid turning up too early or without reservations.
  • Always check with your ferry operator for the latest updates before travelling.

Weather and Other Travel Warnings

Good news at last – dry weather is forecast until Monday, so no rain-related travel chaos expected.

However, travel could get messy because of ongoing strikes in France over pension reforms. Air traffic controllers are walking out, causing many flights to and from France to be cancelled. Eurostar cancelled two trains on Thursday due to crew shortages but expects normal service on Friday.

Protests Add to Continental Chaos

Protesters blocked a key road to Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, forcing many passengers to hoof it on foot to terminals.

All eyes on Dover and Europe as holidaymakers brace themselves for a bumpy start to the long weekend.
