The UK’s famously fickle weather is set to stick around this week. Sunshine, showers and some hefty downpours are on the cards as schools head off for the summer holidays.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Mostly Dry with Sunny Spells
Much of Tuesday and Wednesday will offer mainly dry conditions and occasional bright, sunny spells. Temperatures will hover around the average for the season, giving a fair slice of summer to enjoy.
But by Wednesday afternoon, things start to shift. Rain will move in from the west, drenching parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and western England.
Thursday to Saturday: Rain and Showers Make a Splash
Thursday could bring some steady rain, especially across southern England, while scattered showers will hit other areas. Scotland and Northern Ireland may see longer spells of wet weather.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley warns: “A frontal wave near southern England on Thursday could bring persistent rain and cooler conditions. Friday and Saturday will swing back to a mix of bright spells and showers, with temperatures near or just below normal for late July.”
Sunday: A Breather with Hazy Sunshine
Sunday looks brighter and more settled. There’ll be isolated showers but also decent sunshine, though high cloud will start creeping in from the west, softening the sun’s edge.
Summer Holiday Survival: Tips for Weather and Travel
As millions hit the roads and parks for summer fun, staying prepared is crucial. The Met Office’s WeatherReady campaign offers expert advice to make the most of unpredictable UK summer weather.
RAC Spokesman Rod Dennis urges drivers to check their cars before setting off:
“Make sure your windscreen wipers aren’t damaged and top up washer fluid to keep your view clear. Sunglasses are a must too – dazzling sun glare on a wet road can be dangerous.”
- Plan your journey carefully.
- Stay comfortable on long drives.
- Keep a close eye on weather forecasts.
Looking After Pets in the Summer Mix
Don’t forget your four-legged friends! British Veterinary Association’s Dr Elizabeth Mullineaux advises:
“Even on cloudy or rainy days, avoid walking dogs during the hottest times. And never leave your pet in a car—they can overheat quickly.”
- Check your pet’s access to shade.
- Choose the best times for walks.
- Protect them against sunburn.
Beachgoers: Stay Safe in Unsettled Seas
Despite changeable weather, many will flock to the coast this summer. RNLI Water Safety Manager Sam Hughes warns:
“Always choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags. If you get into trouble, remember ‘Float to Live’: stay calm, tilt your head back, control your breathing, and signal for help.”
