NHS Gets a Spear-prise on National Asparagus Day!
To salute the NHS for their tireless work, nearly 1,000 fresh asparagus spears will be delivered to Worcestershire Royal Hospital on April 23rd – National Asparagus Day. Chief Nurse Paula Gardner will receive the first-cut bounty from Gus the Asparagus Man, who’ll hand out the prized picks to the hard-working staff.
Why Worcestershire Royal? It’s the Home of British Asparagus
The Worcestershire Royal was chosen as it sits in the Vale of Evesham, Britain’s asparagus heartland. This region grows the world’s finest asparagus – thicker, juicier, and packed with flavour. Perfect for thanking the NHS in style!
Asparagus Day Tied to St George’s Day and Ancient Traditions
It’s no accident National Asparagus Day falls on St George’s Day. The asparagus season kicks off officially on April 23rd, and the iconic green spear is the veggie of choice for this patriotic celebration.
Festivities Kick Off at The Fleece Inn
Early on April 23rd, the fun begins at The Fleece Inn in Bretforton – the National Trust’s only pub and the beating heart of the Vale of Evesham. Here, the first asparagus cut is blessed, and an asparamancer will predict the year ahead before the veggie bounty heads off to the hospital handover.
