Major Gas Leak Sparks Overnight Evacuation in South-East London
New Cross Road Shut After Suspected Gas Leak
Emergency crews remain on high alert following a major gas leak on New Cross Road, south-east London. The leak triggered the overnight evacuation of around 100 residents from homes and businesses between Florence Road and Deptford Bridge.
London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed the evacuation as a precaution due to dangerous gas levels detected late on July 9. Both directions of New Cross Road are currently closed as a result.
Travel Chaos as Road Remains Closed
As of 7:30am on July 10, New Cross Road is still shut, causing major disruption for commuters heading into London:
- Eastbound traffic allowed only from Deptford High Street
- Westbound access past Deptford Bridge completely blocked
Transport for London and local authorities urge drivers to avoid the area and expect delays to continue through the morning rush hour.
Fire Brigade Issues Warning
“Firefighters are responding to a suspected gas leak on New Cross Road. Around 100 people have been evacuated from the immediate area as a precaution and road closures are in place. Disruption is expected to last through the night. Please avoid the area as crews respond,” said the London Fire Brigade.
Residents Recall Tense Scenes
Local witnesses reported smelling gas late on Wednesday evening before emergency services arrived. One onlooker described the atmosphere as “calm but tense” as crews quickly secured the scene and evacuated nearby buildings.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.
