Newhaven RNLI Launches Speedy Rescue Lifeboat Trial

Come Saturday, 3 August at 8:00 am, Newhaven RNLI will roll out a new D class lifeboat for service. This two-year trial will test whether the nimble D class lifeboat can boost rescue efforts alongside Newhaven’s powerhouse Severn Class all-weather lifeboat. Every deployment will be closely tracked to see how it performs in action.

Fast, Flexible Rescue Craft Ready to Hit the Waves

The D class lifeboat packs a punch with a top speed of 25 knots and up to three hours at sea. Its razor-sharp manoeuvrability and shallow draft allow it to dart into shallow waters and surf zones where the bigger Severn Class can’t go. Perfect for tight spots near shore, this boat is tailored for rapid search and rescue missions in tricky conditions.

Covering More Ground – Or Water!

Phill Corsi, South East Area Operations Manager, said: “The D class will run taskings east of Newhaven to Belle Tout Lighthouse, west to Telscombe Cliffs, and north up to Lewes and nearby villages.”

Newhaven’s volunteer crew has been prepping for 60 weeks to make sure they’re ready. Three volunteers have earned their D class helm qualifications, and countless training sessions have sharpened their inshore rescue skills.

Volunteers at the Heart of Lifesaving

Roger Cohen MBE, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Newhaven, praised the team: “For the first time ever in Newhaven’s RNLI history, we have three inshore lifeboat helms. Volunteers trained both locally, at RNLI College in Poole, and even spent a weekend at Newquay RNLI to upskill. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the RNLI, and we’re actively recruiting for both lifeboats.”

An impressive 97% of RNLI’s frontline lifesavers are volunteers, including 5,700 lifeboat crew members across the UK and Ireland. Without these heroes, 24/7 rescue missions wouldn’t be possible.
